Gripes, Amusing Observations and Weird Ideas

For several reasons,
I've hardly blogged the last few weeks.
My job has been exhausting
and it's not much an exaggeration to say
that when I come home each day
I plop on the recliner and watch a few hours of TV.
From there I eat dinner,
then give the kids some attention,
then lay down a while and I frequently fall asleep.
When I have to, I force myself
to fix some things around the house first
or mow the lawn.

Summer work sucks all the life out of custodians.
I can't wait for autumn.

Another reason I haven't blogged much
is that blogging everywhere
seems to have tailed off somewhat.
Must be something about summer
because I noticed it last summer, too.
I think
people have many other things they'd rather be doing.
Blogging seems to pick up
as the weather gets cooler, wetter...and snowier.

But I've had some thoughts the last few days.
Gripes, amusing observations and weird ideas...

=There's nothing that makes a 6-year-old happier
than to immediately recognize everything in a picture
that he (or she) drew, without any hints.

=What's with men's denim shorts?
The last few years, they've made the legs so long
that when I get up from a sitting position
the bottom hemmed edges catch on my knees.
This is incredibly irritating.
Do designers think
there's a lot of guys who are 7-foot-3
and have 3-foot-long thighs?
Mens' shorts need to be cut at least 3 inches shorter.
I'm not a short guy - I'm 6-foot-1,
and this is a problem with me.
The worst part is,
what they're doing is costing them
- and us -
money!
Make them shorter
and they would not only be more comfortable
but they'd also be cheaper to make
because less material would be used!

=How long will it be
before someone genetically engineers big trees
- oak, maple or hickory trees -
so you can grow one with with leaves
that are colors other than green?
Many trees have red leaves
but I'm talking other colors...
leaf colors such as baby blue, purple, white or pink.
Some colors would look awful,
but some would be pretty cool.
Or...glow-in-the-dark leaves.
But I wonder what would happen in autumn
when the leaves change color and fall?
I'll bet this could be done
without interfering with
chlorophyll function or production.
Christmas trees could come in a choice of colors, too!

=Do you remember ever watching
any one of several old Three Stooges episodes
where one of them would get punched by some bad guy,
spin around backwards,
and flip upside-down to a position
where he's standing on his head against a wall?
(Actually, it's a simple special effect trick.
They're just coming down
from standing on their head.
They just played it backward.)
My youngest son can really do that.
The other day he got so excited about something
that he ran over and did it on my recliner
in the blink of an eye!

=Imagine a TV commercial,
comedy movie or TV comedy show,
and the camera shows
someone doing something in the foreground.
But the action in front is off-center,
because your attention is really supposed to be focused
on the sight gag going on in the background.
Anymore, I can see it coming.
Boy, I hate forced humor.

=I'm a big supporter of hydrogen power
and I hope they find a practical way
of making and storing solid hydrogen within cars
to use for fuel.
But I've heard hydrogen-powered cars referred to
as "bombs on wheels"
because of how dangerous
moving around a tank full of hydrogen can be.
But whether your car is carrying
400 miles worth of gasoline
or 400 miles worth of hydrogen,
wouldn't the explosion be similar
because the amount of energy stored is equal?
Or does the degree of danger vary widely
because of how the energy is stored?

=I don't know about other parts of the country,
but we're really growing around here
and they're doing a lot of building,
mostly new neighborhoods where fields used to be.
And that results in most of the roads
sporting double-yellow-lines.
I hate a lot of growth
and I sure miss passing lanes.

=A "street-wise" friend and co-worker
- who turns 28 next month -
told me that when he was about 20
he had a car with an incredible sound system,
one with some really powerful speakers.
I don't know if this is common or unusual,
but this was so powerful
that when he'd crank it up
his rear-seat friends would get nosebleeds.
Regularly.
Sounds like it caused brain damage or something!
Not to mention that the volume
vibrated the inside rear-view mirror off his windshield.
And after a while
his friends refused to sit in the back seat any longer.
I'm surprised my buddy has any hearing left!

=After watching my boys blow bubbles outside,
I can't help but wonder
what's the biggest soap bubble that can be made
if you had an instrument big enough to make it
before it collapses on itself
or the atmospheric pressure pops it
or whatever.
Five feet in diameter? 20 feet?

I think you're correct about the lack of blogging. I sometimes wonder if this is a fad which will fade away into the night. There are days when I want to write, and other days when nothing comes to mind.

Glow in the dark tree leaves. I kinda like that idea, but I don't want every tree to be glow in the dark. Too much of some things just aren't good. Occassionally I put on glow in the dark fingernail polish. (An impulse buy during Halloween.) I'm an adult who likes to be a kid every once in a while.

I completely agree about the city growth. Beautiful open fields are being taken over by buildings and asphalt. I've seen deer come close to road intersections. Soon we'll have to have deer crossing signs right beside crosswalk signs.

I really don't like the idea of glowing leaves, either. At least not a lot of trees. But could you imagine seeing a tree like that at night blowing in a soft breeze? It would be something to see.
Besides, one of my favorite memories is camping in a remote part of Ontario, where there was NO electricity anywhere. Even a nearby gas station had gas pumps you had to pump by hand (up and down like an old-fashioned water well pump).
At night, everything outside the tent was pitch black...except the clear sky. It was so easy to see the Milky Way, it was a little scary. I felt like I could see every star in the cosmos. In an instant, I realized how insignificant my existence was in the universe.
So, I like my dark nights and lots of glowing trees would upset that.

The tree idea is supreme.

Surely somebody is developing this somewhere with a view toward designing the most outrageous garden known to man.

i love the details of a child's drawing and agree that fawning over them is a delight when i can see what it does to their ego.

i agree some of the "shorts" (or "longs") are kind of a joke. but i must admit to preferring these over the short-shorts of the past. it looks so funny to see old basketball highlights. the guys looked silly in their daisy dukes! a happy middle-ground would be great. but then it would also be great if (mostly younger) men would remember to pull their pants up! of course these are also frequently the same males who drive around with their stereos blasting at ear-bleeding levels.

Ultra;
I hope you're right.
Although it would have to be a big garden, because I was thinking of trees that get big. Maybe an arboretum or nursery.
Of course, they could start with dwarf tree varieties that the average joe could put in a garden.

Patricia;
Kids just have a huge smile from ear to ear when you make over their drawings and point out everything. They love it!

A middle ground from daisy dukes would be best, but I'd even settle for daisy dukes! There's nothing about my upper thighs that I'm trying to hide! As it is, I feel like there's some invisible force always trying to pull off my pants: while sitting, the hemmed edge goes under my kneecap. Then when I try to get up, my knee pulls on my short pantleg...and thus on my waist!
My co-worker sometimes has pants that are falling down. He claims he "forgot" to put on his belt that morning. I'm guessing he wears them all the time like that when he's not on the job. He does, however, keep pulling them up all day, so he's aware of it. Maybe I'm wrong.

A whole Arboretum?

Yeah! That sounds pretty wild. A whole forest of multicoloured trees.

I would definitely pay good money to see that.

I imagine the tree trunk and limb bark color would remain unchanged. So any change in leaf color should go pretty well with brown.
Then again, people don't usually wear brown and green together as the colors clash. I guess we're used to seeing it together on trees.

I was starting to get worried about you. Glad you're back. I would say it's last year's malaise setting in all over again. But there's been so much "big" news in the last two weeks, it's hard to say. It's hard to be snarky when there are bombs dropping all over. And it's hot!
But I'm glad you're back.

I am guilty of letting the rest of the world and my life take over and not giving time to blogging - even though if I just sat down and did it it would take only a brief period of my time! I don't really give it a second thought when not updating my blog - but yet when I find a moment to check in on others and other people have been as absent as me - I miss not having you around!

I love your tree idea - although I would plant trees that had varying shades on the one tree - rainbow trees! Rather than a solid Purple tree - maybe a tree that goes from deep purple on the top down to a light lilac on the bottom. My favourite flowering shrub is my Lantana - the flowers come out all kinds of colours - right there on the same stem - such a pretty flower - now if they could do that with a tree - the world would be a brighter place! Glo-In-The-Dark?.......sure would be handy for edging my pathway - I like it too!

Shayera;
Thanks.
I don't know how long I'll be back. The most successful blogs are ones that are controversial, that is, they invite a lot of discussion. Political blogs are very successful, too.
Mine is neither.
My blog opens a window into my life, a life that's not really interesting enough to keep people tuned in regularly.
Some people
- like myself, you and several others -
like to read about other people's lives.
But most don't, I'm afraid.
I'm getting fewer and fewer readers. I've lost several readers recently.
My anonymity doesn't help, I'm sure. People would like to know who they're talking to.
But shayera, I'm hoping it's like you said,
a summer malaise,
it'll be gone when the weather starts getting cool, and maybe I'll be getting more visitors.

AverageHousewife!;
Unfortunately, I imagine that if they introduced a gene to a tree to change it's leaf colors, all the leaves would be the same color and not a rainbow effect. However, the veins of the leaf might be a darker or more pronounced color as opposed to the rest of the leaf - which would be a lighter shade.
That would be cool, don't you think? If you'd like a tree that's deep purple on top and lighter toward the bottom, I'll bet you'd like leaves like that!

I wouldn't mind an electric blue colored tree, that would be wicked cool!!

Anyone who wants to grow healthy plants should know that location is one of the most important factors that governs successful growth of plants. Most people buy a plant, go out into the garden, dig a hole somewhere, and place the plant in the soil: and when the plant fails to grow, they blame the nursery or soil. Site selection is vital if you want your plants to grow and thrive. Choosing the best site can save a lot of frustration and headaches. native plants tree nursery
