666
The temptation was just too great
to post this today!
Actually, today's date isn't "666"
as far as I'm concerned.
To me, that date would be June 6th, 6 a.d.
...two-thousand years ago.
And as long as they're going to use
only the last number of the year,
it'll recur again June 6th, 2016.
And 2026. And 2036.
Ooops...I'd better not give them any ideas, huh?
Anyway, I read in yesterday's local paper
that the book of Revelations in the bible says
the real number of the beast is 616!
Why hasn't anybody caught on?
Daniel P. Winters, author of Superstitions 101, says
"Because 'six-six-six' rolls off the tongue easier.
Plus, The Omen would have to be re-written,
related superstitions reconsidered,
the stars re-aligned
and a whole population re-educated.
And, I'd have to re-write my book!",
he said with a laugh.
It amazes me,
- not only because was this mistake ever made -
but it's thrived over the centuries
and now some people are terrified of 666.
For no reason.
But this obvious mistake
that...over the centuries...
no one ever bothered to correct for the masses
begs the question...
how many other parts of the bible are there
that simply aren't true?
Or, how many omissions were made
that some knew about back then?
Hmmm....
maybe Jesus was married and had kids or something,
.....right?
Or maybe Judas was a cool guy after all.

There should be a Guiness listing for "longest running hoax" - maybe 666 would qualify, lol.
Well, there is a massive portion of Jesus' life missing from the bible. He goes from being 12 to 30 (or something close to that)
Recently, a gospel was found that is alleged to have been written by Judas.
I can't wait to read that, if the church ever let it out.
Is somebody referring to a recent movie that came out? Or perhaps some manuscript that was found? I think he is!
I like all of the billboard for The Omen that say "6+6+06." When I see this, I think "18!" It's all just hype to me.
I think there's probably quite a bit that's being withheld from the public. Part of the problem is that the Bible has been translated. A translation project for a tome of that magnitude is likely to lose more than a few details. Another part would probably be Church law and corruption through the years. I'm not saying that the Church is completely corrupt, but people are people and throughout history, there have been leaders (be they religious or political) who have fallen to corruption. Now, I'm not entirely certain of my source, but I think this is an entirely possible scenario: priests are supposed to be celibate to ensure that any land the priest owns stays within the Church. If a priest were to have children and then he died, the children would inherit the land and the Church would be out a parcel of property. As I understand it, there is nothing religious about a priest being celibate. It's all about money. Once again, I don't know how accurate my source is, but I think it's not out of the realm of possibility.
what annoys me the most is the people who get their panties in such a bunch over a number. it's a number, people! it holds only the power that it is given, which for me, is zero.

Maybe you've just given Guiness an idea! Longest Running Hoax is a very good idea for a new category in their book! And this one would be a good candidate, but there's still a zillion people who would insist 666 is correct.
UTMG;
I used to go to catechism every Saturday when I was a kid and I remember asking my teachers over the years why nothing was written about Jesus when he was "my age". The answer was always "I dunno."
Lets see...
virgin birth, our savior...
don't you think someone would've followed every move he made at least as much as the paparazzi follows J-Lo?
Doug;
Movie and manuscript? Guilty as changed! HA!
I don't know about a priest's family inheriting land. I'm pretty sure all the land and structures on it belong to the diocese and ultimately to the Vatican and a priest is pretty much a renter. So his family (if he had one) would be, too.
As far as a priest being celebate, when I used to go to Catholic church I was always told that priests are celebate because they must devote all their time and energy to church duties and not a family.
Ha-ha-a-a!!! Yes, that's really what I was told!
Patricia;
I agree 100%!
And people tell me the Harry Potter book and movie series is evil because it promotes witchcraft.
I reply,
"You get out of it what you want to get out of it. And it won't turn kids toward the occult if they were raised by sensible parents."
The same goes with 666 (or 616) as far as I'm concerned.
Your response to the Harry Potter stories reminds me of something one of my cousins had to "deal" with. She's a high school teacher and, when The DaVinci Code started getting all of its publicity, the kids started asking her if everything in the book was true and if there really were secret organizations within the Catholic Church and whatnot. She said "Look at the cover of the book: The DaVinci Code A NOVEL! This means it's FICTION!"
I suppose some people think the Nazis had it right and we should just burn books we don't approve of.
Doug;
It must've terrified her that someone would even present her with a question like that!
Not really. She's not the sort of person who would worry about such things. She's more likely to get tired with them for asking stupid questions than be terrified about how to answer something like that. She's extremely straightforward. She'll give you a blunt answer without blinking. She's one of those teachers that believes you shouldn't withhold any information from the students. It makes her appear mean sometimes, but she really just tries to tell the truth.
